HISTORY

Birštonas, as a resort town, has been known for years for its mineral waters, and the distinctiveness of its waters is known since 1382.
The name Birštonas was for the first time mentioned in 1382, in reports of intelligence officers of the orders of the Crusaders as "a farmstead by salty water" (Birstain or Bristan). They were found at the beginning of the XIX century in the secret archives of Karaliaučius (Kaliningrad) by the Lithuanian explorer Teorodas Narbutas. Chemical analysis of sources carried out by scientists in the middle of the XIX century confirmed that the water is suitable for curing. The year 1846 is recorded as the year, in which the first patient was successfully cured in Birštonas, who was previously unsuccessfully treated with other waters. This date is deemed to be the official date of establishment of the resort. However, in 1860 N.Krasnovskis noted that people used to come to Birštonas for its mineral waters considerably before the year 1846. He notes that people who were coming to Birštonas for treatment purposes were staying in bathing huts of locals, to which water was brought from the sources and locals used to help make baths. In 1860, Birštonas resort town was awarded the rights of a balneotherapeutic resort. In 1860, Birštonas resort town was awarded the rights of a balneotherapeutic resort.

One could claim that two sources of mineral water, Vytautas and Birutė, were the reasons behind the birth of the resort town.
